Travel & Holidays

Travel and holiday sites

Expedia www.expedia.co.uk  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 5 Stars
Expedia review: In our view, Expedia provides the greatest range of flights, hotels, car hire, and other holidays of all the online travel centres. Even our obscure flight across the middle of Russia was accurately planned and booked. Very smart.

Helpful Holidays www.helpfulholidays.com  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
Helpful Holidays review: For cottages and houses throughout England's Westcountry. Helpful Holidays are friendly, reliable and will give you completely honest opinions of their accommodation. Browse online, or speak directly to one of their staff for a personal recommendation. Thanks for your vote

Streetmap www.streetmap.co.uk  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
Streetmap review: View maps by postcode, placename or grid reference throughout the UK. And all completely free. Great stuff. There are a few of these around now, but we find Streetmap the simplest to use.

Late Rooms www.laterooms.co.uk  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
Late Rooms review: Having given up with Lastminute.com, where we have spent many hours without ever successfully finding a holiday, we took a look at LateRooms. A revelation! A guide to discounted hotel rooms in the UK and abroad, from the very highest class, to more run-of-the-mill. You generally can't book online, but the prices are just a phonecall away.

The AA www.theaa.com  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
The AA review: Pretty much what you'd expect from the AA. Good quality route finder (including costs), hotel recommendations, access to all the usual AA products and services. Also features a extensive range of car reviews.

European Transport Timetable http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/qu...  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
European Transport Timetable review: Okay, so it's a German site, and is therefore cautiously included in UKHelpdesk. But any site which can tell you how to get from London to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, including all changes, and a map for the last two hundred yards on foot, deserves a place here. Takes you from Aberdeen to Lisbon, Istanbul or Peking (via Moscow).

QJump www.qjump.co.uk  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 2 Stars
QJump review: Sadly attempts to queue jump are limited by a poor site compared to TheTrainLine. Annoyances include not knowing which tickets are available for the selected train until you attempt to book, leading to lengthy frustration searching for when you can book the cheapest fare. Not a total disaster, and a relatively new site, so hopefully it will improve.

TheTrainLine www.thetrainline.com  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
TheTrainLine review: Plan and book UK train journeys online. This site has spent a lot of time on our Grim List previously, but it does seem to be the best of the bunch. Shows clearly which fares are available at which time, but still has annoyances in the interface - using a combination of the browser back button and a onscreen 'back', asking you to note down a booking reference number which is never provided. Our original gripe (Aug 2000) was that the tickets never actually turned up, so we recommend booking well in advance.

RAC Route Planner www.rac.co.uk  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
RAC Route Planner review: The RAC site has lots of useful information, but the best is the online route planner which will give you the time and distance from A to B anywhere in the UK.

Russia Experience www.trans-siberian.co.uk  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
Russia Experience review: Whether it's a week in St Petersburg & Siberia, or riding the Trans-Siberian railway all the way to Beijing, these are the experts. They'll deal with all the bureaucracy, arrange for a local 'buddy' to guide you around the country, and can organise diving or trekking in Siberia - all around your personal itinerary. Disclaimer: We have a family interest in this company, but have also been on three fantastic holidays with them.

What's On When www.whatsonwhen.com  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 4 Stars
What's On When review: What's On listings for the whole world. Whether you're planning a trip abroad to coincide with the Palio horse race in Siena, or hope to catch a massive music and literature festival in Paris, or are just looking for some local entertainment, this could be the place to find it. Registering allows you to tailor the site to match your needs, and add events to your scrapbook.

British Airports Authority (BAA) www.baa.com  Open Site in New Window
Rating: 3 Stars
British Airports Authority (BAA) review: Tries to bombard you with information, but all you really want are the flight arrival times which are hidden away.
Interesting subnote: The BAA domain names were the subject of a dispute during 2000, with the British Airports Authority finally triumphing over some fans of woollen jumpers who have been displaced to www.baa.net - read more about it on The Register.
