What is this site all about?

There are two primary methods of finding websites - links from portal sites such as MSN, and through search engines such as Yahoo and Google. Each have their problems for you, the web user:

- Portals strike deals with websites to provide links. So you get the huge providers like Amazon and CNN, but miss out on half the joy of the web - the smaller sites providing niche products and curiousities.

- Search Engines simply overload you with information. Even the simplest search will produce hundreds of websites about which you are told virtually nothing. Descriptions are generally written by the website authors, and their position on the results page is determined either by payment or dedication to the black art of search engine promotion. In our experience we spend longer scrolling through the search engine listings than we do on the site we finally find.

Wouldn't it be easier if there was a directory which took the time to discover which sites were relevant, trustworthy and actually useful. Sites that delivered goods when they promised, charged your credit card for the amount agreed, were presented clearly, and gave accurate information.

Well that's exactly what we are trying to produce at UKHelpdesk. We don't list many sites, but the ones that are here are the very best the web can provide for a UK audience. Good-looking, reliable, prompt, and web-cheap. These are the ones we use on a daily basis for shopping, information and entertainment.

All sites on UKHelpdesk go through a rigorous testing regime - we have actually spent a lot of time on these sites, we've ordered goods, checked they arrived and checked credit card bills. Specifically, we look at: clarity of information and ease of use; relevance for a UK audience; accuracy and completeness of information; delivery to promise; quality of goods as delivered; accuracy and timeliness of financial transactions.
